The Fuquay-Varina Revitalization Association will host free Holiday Sleigh Rides sponsored by Patriot State Bank on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 6– 8 p.m. during the Town Christmas Tree Lighting.

The sleigh rides will be located at Ashworth’s BP Station (120 S. Main Street) in downtown Fuquay-Varina. This year, a ticket is required to ride. A limited number of free sleigh tickets will be distributed beginning at 5 p.m. the day of the event at the Raleigh Street Parking Lot which is located at the corner of Raleigh and S. Main Streets (next to Joyce & Family Restaurant). There is a limit of four tickets per adult. All others riders must be present to get single tickets. Children age 2 and under do not need a ticket if they are sitting on an adult’s lap during the sleigh ride. Tickets will be distributed until they run out. The last ride of the evening will be at 7:55 p.m.

The Christmas Tree lighting, sponsored by the Town of Fuquay-Varina’s Parks and Recreation Department will take place at 7 p.m. at 233 S. Main Street (large parking lot across from Cooley’s Restaurant). The tree lighting and sleigh rides are the official kick-off to the holiday season.

The U.S. housing market welcomed a bigger share of first-time buyers and single women this past year, while a majority of sellers resorted to dialing down prices to get their homes sold, a new homebuyer survey shows.

First-time buyers accounted for a record 47 percent of U.S. home sales between July 2008 and June this year, up from 41 percent in the prior-year period, according to the survey conducted by the National Association of Realtors.

The annual survey gleans details on everything from how buyers came up with down payments to how long it took sellers to unload their homes. The latest results were derived from more than 9,000 responses, the trade association said Home sales and prices have shown some signs of stabilizing this year, and the survey results affirm the market continued to favor buyers, particularly first-timers. "Tax incentives, record high affordability conditions and a pent-up demand brought a record share of first-time home buyers into the market," said Paul Bishop, the trade association's vice president of research. First-time homebuyers this year have been able to take advantage of a tax credit of up to $8,000 meant to entice new homebuyers to enter the market.

Congress extended the tax incentive through next June, as long as the buyer signs a binding contract by the end of April. The program also was expanded to include a $6,500 credit for existing homeowners who buy a new place after living in their current residence for at least five years. First-time buyers had a median age of 30 and reported a median income of $61,600, the survey shows. The typical first-time buyer paid $156,000 for their home, about $9,000 less than in the Realtors' 2008 survey. Repeat buyers were typically a few years older, 48, and earned a bit more than first-timers: $88,100. They also said they planned to stay in the home for 12 years.

Sellers had to go the extra mile to sell their homes, with 52 percent offering incentives like paying for closing costs. They also lowered prices. The typical home sold for 95 percent of the original listing price, the survey shows. Still, many sellers came out ahead. The median amount over the price sellers originally paid for their home was $36,000.

The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce 7th annual Day in Downtown, this year held on Halloween, will feature a number of family oriented contests for all ages. The event will be held Saturday, October 31 on Main Street in Historic Downtown Fuquay. There will be four contests held this year that will be open to the public.
They are:
COSTUME CONTEST: Your children can show off their Halloween finery to those gathered at the festival. This contest is open to all children ages 14 and younger, with participants divided into three age groups and prizes in each. Children will model their costumes to the crowd while the judging is done. Registration for this contest will be the morning of the festival with the contest starting at noon.
PUMPKIN COLORING CONTEST: This is a chance for the very youngest to show off their coloring skills and creativity. Children ages 10 and younger are eligible to color a picture of a pumpkin that is available on the Chamber’s web site. Contestants will be divided into two age categories with awards given in each. Colored pictures must be submitted to the Chamber by Thursday, October 29. Finalists will be posted at the festival where the winner will be announced.
PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST: Show how creative and scary you can get. Open to all ages, entrants must pre-register with the Chamber. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: scariest; funniest; and most creative. There will be a $25.00 prize awarded in each category. The contest is limited to 50 participants, and submissions will be displayed at the festival. There is a $5.00 registration fee. Rules and entry form are available on the Chamber’s web site.
PUMPKIN PIE CONTEST: Attention everyone who thinks they have the best pumpkin pie recipe in town. This is your chance to prove it. This contest is open to all non-professionals, with an original recipe. First place prize is $50.00 and second place is $25.00. Entrants must pre-register with the Chamber and pies delivered to the Chamber Friday, October 30. There is a $5.00 fee to enter. On Saturday, June 6th, more than 75 artists and fine craftsman will celebrate the arts and Fuquay-Varina’s 100th Anniversary at the Celebration of the Arts. The Celebration of the Arts includes local artists from Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Apex, Angier, Clayton, and Wake Forest, but the festival also boasts artists from places a bit farther away such as Hendersonville, NC and Hollywood SC. Great News for First Time Home Buyer's!

Shaun Donovan, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, on Tuesday said that the Federal Housing Administration is going to permit its lenders to allow home buyers to use the $8,000 tax credit as a down payment. He says FHA’s approved lenders will be permitted to “monetize” the tax credit through short-term bridge loans. This will allow eligible home buyers to access the funds immediately at the closing table.
